Fixodent Side Effects

Fixodent side effects like zinc poisoning may lead to injury lawsuits being filed by patients. If you have been affected by the denture cream, contact a Fixodent attorney to discuss your compensation options.

Denture creams like Fixodent have become the subject of significant scrutiny in recent years, due to concerns about the safety of zinc, which is a common ingredient in these products. Recent studies have indicated that exposure to excessive amounts of zinc, such as in denture adhesives like Fixodent, can lead to life-altering side effects among patients, including zinc poisoning and neuropathy. Unfortunately, Fixodent and other denture creams are categorized as Class I medical devices by the FDA, which means that manufacturers aren't required to include warning labels notifying consumers how much zinc is actually contained in their denture creams. In light of the severe risks associated with the zinc in denture creams, the FDA has requested that denture adhesive manufacturers like Procter & Gamble remove zinc from their products, which many companies have adhered to. Procter & Gamble however, refuses to remove the dangerous zinc ingredient from its Fixodent denture creams, claiming that its products are safe for consumers to use as directed. If you used the denture adhesive Fixodent and have since suffered from serious neurological side effects, contact a Fixodent attorney for help.

Zinc Poisoning

Most people consume the daily recommended amount of zinc in their everyday diet, and others take daily supplements to maintain a healthy zinc consumption. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown that consumers who are exposed to excessive amounts of zinc over a long period of time, such as in long-term use of denture creams like Fixodent, may be at risk of experiencing severe side effects, including zinc poisoning. Zinc poisoning, or zinc toxicity, can lead to debilitating symptoms like poor balance, tingling in the extremities, unexplained weakness, numbness, lack of coordination and a burning sensation. Excessive exposure to zinc can also suppress copper absorption, which can eventually lead to a copper deficiency and long-term physical disability.

Neuropathy, or nerve pain, is a serious condition characterized by damage to the nerves of the peripheral nervous system, and can be caused by exposure to unhealthy levels of zinc. Neuropathy can affect nerves that control muscle movement and those that detect sensations such as pain or coldness. In some cases, neuropathy can even affect internal organs like the heart, blood vessels, intestines or bladder. Because neuropathy severely inhibits nerve function, patients suffering from this condition typically exhibit symptoms like unexplained weakness, loss of balance, numbness in parts of the body, and loss of sensation. Without treatment, neuropathy can cause incapacitating side effects, including permanent loss of nerve function, chronic pain, irreversible tissue damage and muscle atrophy.

Fixodent FDA Warnings and Side Effect Studies

In February 2011, the FDA sent a Notice and Recommended Action letter to denture cream manufacturers like Procter & Gamble, concerning the numerous adverse event reports the agency had received regarding the use of zinc-containing denture creams like Fixodent. The FDA notice alerted denture adhesive manufacturers that, although zinc is considered an essential nutrient, overexposure to zinc can result in severe zinc toxicity side effects. The FDA letter also advised Procter & Gamble and other denture cream companies to remove zinc from their products in order to prevent additional consumer harm. Unfortunately, Procter & Gamble still refuses to remove the dangerous ingredient from its Fixodent products.

In 2008, the journal Neurology published a study which indicated that long-term use of zinc-containing denture creams like Fixodent caused four patients to suffer from debilitating side effects like unexplained limb weakness and poor balance. Although the zinc in denture adhesives was previously believed to be dangerous, this was the first study to suggest that Fixodent and other zinc-containing denture adhesives may cause the body to purge itself of copper, leading to severe nerve damage.
