Researchers have indicated that long-term use of zinc-containing denture creams may cause patients to suffer from zinc poisoning side effects like neuropathy (nerve pain). Although zinc is needed in order for the body to function properly, and most people consume the daily recommended amount of zinc by eating a healthy diet, studies have shown that overexposure to zinc can lead to major neurological side effects like neuropathy. Unfortunately, because the FDA has categorized denture creams as Class I medical devices, manufacturing companies aren't required to include a warning on the product label notifying patients how much zinc is actually contained in their products. Many denture cream manufacturers used zinc in their products because it provided a good hold for dentures. However, since the dangerous nature of excessive exposure to zinc has been revealed, many manufacturers have removed the ingredient from their products. Some denture cream manufacturers however, including Procter & Gamble (Fixodent), have refused to do so. If you took a zinc-containing denture cream and have since experienced a serious side effect like neuropathy, contact a denture cream attorney for help.

Neuropathy Symptoms

Neuropathy, or nerve pain, is a serious condition characterized by damage to the nerves of the peripheral nervous system (the part of the nervous system outside the spinal cord and brain), sometimes caused by excessive exposure to the zinc in some denture creams. Neuropathy can affect the nerves that detect sensations like pain and coldness, the nerves that control muscle movement, and can even affect vital organs like the heart, blood vessels, bladder or intestines. Nerve pain associated with neuropathy is typically described as a burning or tingling sensation, although some neuropathy victims may suffer from additional symptoms like loss of balance, and unexplained weakness, loss of sensation, or numbness in parts of the body.

Neuropathy Treatment and Prognosis

In order to adequately treat neuropathy, the underlying cause of the condition must be determined and addressed. For patients whose neuropathy was caused by the use of zinc-containing denture creams like Fixodent or Poligrip, use of the potentially dangerous product should be discontinued immediately. Unfortunately, patients who have stopped using Fixodent, Poligrip or other zinc-containing denture creams may still have dangerous levels of zinc in their body, which can lead to zinc poisoning and neuropathy. Research has indicated that long-term exposure to zinc can cause the body to purge itself of copper, potentially leading to a copper deficiency and permanent nerve damage. If left untreated, neuropathy can cause incapacitating side effects like muscle atrophy, chronic pain and irreparable tissue damage.

FDA Warnings and Denture Cream Side Effect Studies

In 2008, the journal Neurology published a groundbreaking study in which researchers determined that long-term use of zinc-containing denture creams caused four patients to exhibit debilitating side effects like poor balance and unexplained limb weakness. Although the zinc contained in denture creams was believed to be dangerous in the past, this was the first study to suggest that zinc-containing denture creams like Fixodent and Poligrip may inhibit the body's ability to absorb copper, possibly leading to severe nerve damage and physical disability. Shortly after this study was published, a Vanderbilt University researcher curious about examining unexplained cases of low blood-copper levels in which patients developed crippling disabilities, investigated eleven of these patients. According to the findings, all eleven patients were using excessive amounts of denture creams.

In February 2011, the FDA issued a Notice and Recommended Action letter to denture cream manufacturers, requesting that they remove zinc from their products. This FDA notice came in response to the numerous adverse event reports the agency had received regarding the use of zinc-containing denture creams like Poligrip and Fixodent. According to the letter, although zinc is considered an essential nutrient, overexposure to zinc resulting from long-term denture cream use can result in debilitating side effects. Many denture cream manufacturers adhered to the FDA's request, although Fixodent maker Procter & Gamble still refuses to do so, insisting that its product is safe for consumers to use as directed.

Denture Cream Attorneys for Neurological Side Effects

The neurological side effects, including neuropathy, potentially linked to denture creams may cause long-term pain and suffering for affected individuals. If you or a loved one has suffered from a neuropathy side effect and you believe denture creams to be the cause, contact a qualified denture cream attorney to discuss your legal options. You may have grounds to file a denture cream lawsuit against the manufacturing company in order to seek financial compensation for your injuries, the medical cost of treating your injuries, and the pain and suffering endured by you and your family. Product manufacturing companies are expected to develop safe products for consumer use, and should be held accountable for any adverse side effects sustained by consumers of their products. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. By hiring an experienced denture cream lawyer to represent your case, you can collect the compensation you deserve and protect yourself and your family from further harm.
